Šiauliai Academy scientists, Professor Dr Ingrida Šaulienė and Associate Professor Dr Laura Šukienė, participated in the international workshop "Bioaerosols and their impact on health and climate change", held on 9-13 March 2025. At the University of Lyon 1, France, on 14 and 20 March 2018.

This event, organized by members of the Arqus Alliance, was well attended by researchers, postgraduate and PhD students from Lithuania, Spain, Germany, and France. The workshop featured open lectures where experienced scientists shared the latest research results on bioaerosols and scientific progress. In addition to lecturing, representatives of the Academy of VU Šiauliai also moderated individual sessions, sharing their experience and insights into bioaerosol research. The lectures will be made available to the public through the Arqus Alliance's open-access channels, promoting science's popularisation and knowledge dissemination.

The meeting addressed topical issues related to the impact of bioaerosols on human health, climate change, and the environment. Scientists highlighted the importance of research on bioaerosols, not only in the context of health but also in the context of biodiversity conservation. They also discussed the potential threats of bioaerosols and ways to manage them. Particular attention was paid to the role of bioaerosols in climate change processes, analyzing their impact on atmospheric composition and possible solutions to mitigate this impact.   Intense scientific debate has shown that bioaerosol research is a promising scientific field that requires an interdisciplinary approach.

They formed the basis for a new interdisciplinary collaborative group that brought together physicists, chemists, molecular biology experts, microbiologists, botanists, ecologists, and geographers. This initiative aims to develop bioaerosol research in the context of the Arqus Alliance, integrating knowledge and resources from different disciplines. The newly created interdisciplinary group is already planning its first projects, which will focus on small steps to assess the potential for collaboration and to build a solid foundation for future research.
"The workshop has provided an excellent opportunity to share our research findings and connect with other research groups that are typically not engaged in aerobiology events. This exemplifies how international collaboration can foster innovative solutions," stated Prof. Ingrida Šaulienė.   The Winter Workshop on "Bioaerosols and their impact on health and climate change" highlighted the relevance of the field and showed that an interdisciplinary approach is the key to addressing complex global challenges. This initiative is expected to mark the beginning of a new phase in bioaerosols research, where scientists from different countries and disciplines will work together to protect human health and mitigate the effects of climate change.
